As numbers start to rise, many states have issued stay-at-home orders in hopes that this will lower the chances of spreading the coronavirus. Even with these orders, you will still need groceries, pick up prescriptions, and also head to work if you are an “essential employee.” Because of this, it’s essential to know how to protect yourself and those who live with you from the potential spread of COVID-19.
How does the Coronavirus Spread?
Since there is currently no vaccine to reduce or prevent the spread of the virus, it’s best to do everything possible to avoid any illness by avoiding exposure to it. With that said, the virus is spread mainly from person-to-person. This can include:
- People within six feet of each other. It’s essential to follow the social distance rule if you do need to go out.
- Respiratory droplets that come from a person who coughs, talks, or sneezes. These droplets can land on anyone nearby and are easily inhaled.
- Even if you have no symptoms, you can still spread the virus.
What Can You Do?
The best course of action outside of staying home is following the current CDC Guidelines. Also, when possible, practice social distancing and wash your hands often with soap and water. Do this for at least 20 seconds. This is especially vital if you’ve been out in public, sneezing, coughing, or even blowing your nose. You can use a hand sanitizer that is at a minimum of 60% alcohol. Most importantly, avoid touching your face with unwashed hands. Cover all coughs and sneezes and throw all tissues in the trash. It’s also vital to wear a cloth mask when going out in public. Even though you may not feel sick, it will help protect others.
Clean and Disinfect
Any surfaces that are touched daily should be cleaned and disinfected. You may not realize how much you touch until you start cleaning these surfaces. Use some form of detergent or soap before you start disinfecting anything.
